Awareness
There are many platforms online where you can communicate with others. Not only WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram, and other so-called ‘instant messengers’, but also Discord, which is widely used to talk while playing games together.

But Discord is closed, commercial software. As a user, you depend entirely on what the platform owner decides. For example, it shows ads and will introduce age verification in March: you will have to prove to Discord that you are an adult before you can fully use the platform.
If you do this with a copy of your passport, Discord promises that the partners who process the document will ‘quickly’ delete it. But you have to trust that this actually happens. In practice, such documents are often not deleted, or only much later than promised. If a copy leaks or is stolen, you could become a victim of identity fraud.
Why take that risk when you can use a platform where it isn’t necessary?
Choose Matrix. It can do the same as Discord (and much more), but it is open source and decentralized. That means you can run your own server, where you are 100% in charge and decide the rules and who gets access.
You might think, “but you can also create your own Discord server”. However, that is just your own space on Discord’s single, central server. On Matrix, you can also create such spaces, but there they are called ‘Spaces’, and they can live on different servers.
The possibilities of Matrix are endless, and its security is proven by the fact that more and more governments and large organizations, where security and independence are essential, are using it. The European Commission is also adopting Matrix.
If you still want to communicate with contacts on Discord (or Signal, Telegram, Slack, or any other platform), you can add a so-called bridge to your Matrix server. This is a connection to another platform. From Matrix, you can then talk to people on Discord, Signal, Telegram, or any other platform you have bridged.
In short, Matrix gives you a complete and secure communication platform. You can run your own server, or use one of the many public servers available.
